General
Choosing the right camera system depends on your vehicle type, what you need to see, and the level of protection and visibility you require. At TNK Engineering, we supply camera and monitoring systems for a wide range of vehicles, including HGVs, vans, trailers, agricultural vehicles, coaches, minibuses, motorhomes, caravans, horseboxes and other commercial vehicles. When choosing a system, consider:Vehicle type and size – Larger vehicles may benefit from multiple cameras or a 360° camera system, while smaller vehicles may only require a rear-view or side camera. What you need to monitor – Rear, side, front or blind-spot visibility can each require a different camera solution.Camera view – Choose from standard, wide-angle, side-view, rear-view and specialist camera options depending on the area you need to cover.Monitor requirements – Systems are available with different monitor sizes and configurations, including systems that can display multiple camera views.Image quality – For clear visibility, particularly in low light or challenging conditions, an HD or AHD camera system may be the best option.Vehicle use and environment – Construction, agriculture and other demanding applications may require particularly robust, weather-resistant equipment.Additional safety features – Radar, ultrasonic sensors, AI detection and 360° camera systems can provide additional protection against vulnerable road users and obstacles. Not sure which system is right for you? Our team can help you choose a suitable camera system based on your vehicle and requirements. Simply contact TNK Engineering with your vehicle type, make/model and what you would like the system to achieve, and we'll point you in the right direction.

The right camera system depends on your vehicle type, size, the areas you need to monitor and how the vehicle is used.TNK Engineering supplies camera and monitoring solutions for a wide range of vehicles, including:HGVs and commercial vehicles – rear, side and multi-camera systems for improved visibility and blind-spot coverage.Vans – compact rear and side-view camera systems designed for improved visibility when manoeuvring.Agricultural and plant machinery – robust camera systems suitable for demanding working environments.Horseboxes and trailers – rear and side cameras to improve visibility around the vehicle and trailer.Coaches and minibuses – multi-camera solutions for monitoring the rear, sides and surrounding areas.Motorhomes and caravans – rear-view and side-view systems to make manoeuvring and towing easier. For larger vehicles or where comprehensive coverage is required, multi-camera or 360° camera systems may be more suitable. Additional technologies such as radar and ultrasonic sensors can also be used alongside cameras to provide extra detection and warning. If you're unsure which system you need, contact TNK Engineering with your vehicle make, model and what you need the cameras to cover, and we can recommend a suitable solution.
AHD (Analogue High Definition) camera systems provide a higher-resolution image than traditional standard-definition analogue camera systems. The main difference is image quality. AHD systems can provide a clearer, more detailed picture, making it easier to see vehicles, obstacles and other objects around your vehicle.AHD camera systemsHigher image resolution and greater detailClearer picture for reversing and manoeuvringBetter visibility when monitoring larger areasAvailable in HD resolutions such as 1080pIdeal for customers who want improved image clarityStandard analogue camera systemsLower resolution than AHDSuitable for basic rear-view and monitoring applicationsOften a cost-effective option for simpler installationsCompatible with existing analogue equipment where applicableIt's important to check compatibility before upgrading. AHD cameras and monitors need to support compatible AHD standards, although some Brigade monitors are compatible with both AHD and traditional CVBS/analogue cameras. If you're unsure whether AHD is suitable for your vehicle or existing equipment, contact TNK Engineering and we can help you choose a compatible system.
DVS (Direct Vision Standard) is a Transport for London (TfL) scheme designed to improve the safety of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) operating in London by reducing collisions between HGVs and vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. The DVS applies to HGVs over 12 tonnes operating in Greater London. Vehicles are given a star rating based on how much the driver can see directly from the cab.If your vehicle does not meet the required direct vision standard, you may need additional safety equipment to obtain an HGV Safety Permit. Since October 2024, vehicles that require additional measures must meet the Progressive Safe System (PSS) requirements.Depending on your vehicle and its requirements, this can include equipment such as:Nearside camera monitoring systemsBlind-spot detection systemsMoving-off sensorsFront detection systemsAudible vehicle manoeuvring warningsClass V and VI mirrors or suitable camera systemsSide under-run protectionVisual warning signageSome newer vehicles may already have suitable systems fitted from the manufacturer and may not require additional equipment. For example, vehicles fitted with a compliant Blind Spot Information System (BSIS) under UNECE Regulation 151 may not need a separate nearside camera monitoring system for this requirement.Do I need a DVS-compliant system? If you operate an HGV over 12 tonnes in Greater London, you should check your vehicle's DVS star rating and HGV Safety Permit requirements before choosing equipment.TNK Engineering can supply suitable Brigade camera, radar, blind-spot detection and other vehicle safety systems to help meet the relevant requirements. If you're unsure what your vehicle needs, contact TNK Engineering with your vehicle details and current DVS equipment, and we can help identify the appropriate system.lease note: DVS requirements can depend on the individual vehicle and its existing equipment. Always check the latest requirements directly with TfL before purchasing or fitting equipment.
Both radar and ultrasonic detection systems are designed to help drivers detect obstacles around a vehicle, but they use different technology and are suited to different applications.Radar detectionRadar systems use radio waves to detect objects around the vehicle. They can detect objects at greater distances and can distinguish between stationary and moving objects on some systems.Radar is particularly useful for larger vehicles, blind-spot monitoring, front detection and vulnerable road user protection.Ultrasonic detectionUltrasonic systems use high-frequency sound waves to detect nearby objects. They are particularly effective at short-range detection, making them useful when manoeuvring, reversing or monitoring blind spots.Ultrasonic sensors can provide staged audible and visual warnings as an object gets closer to the vehicle.Which is right for my vehicle? The best option depends on your vehicle type, operating environment and the area you need to monitor.Radar – ideal for longer-range detection and identifying moving or stationary objects.Ultrasonic – ideal for close-range obstacle detection and manoeuvring. Both – some vehicles can benefit from combining radar and ultrasonic detection with cameras for more comprehensive protection.TNK Engineering supplies a range of Brigade radar and ultrasonic detection systems and can help you choose the most suitable solution for your vehicle. Not sure which technology you need? Contact TNK Engineering with your vehicle details and requirements, and we'll be happy to advise.
Yes, in many cases an existing vehicle camera system can be upgraded rather than replaced completely. The options available will depend on your current equipment, wiring, monitor, cameras and the type of upgrade you are looking for. For example, you may be able to:Upgrade from standard-definition cameras to AHD/HD cameras for improved image quality.Add additional rear, front or side cameras to improve visibility.Upgrade your monitor to support multiple camera inputs or higher-resolution cameras.Add radar or ultrasonic detection alongside your existing camera system.Add digital recording or AI camera technology for additional monitoring and safety features.Replace individual faulty or outdated components rather than the entire system.Compatibility is important. Not all cameras, monitors and cables are interchangeable, so we recommend checking your existing system before purchasing replacement or upgrade equipment. If you're considering an upgrade, contact TNK Engineering with details of your existing system, including the camera or monitor model numbers and, if possible, photos of the equipment. We can help determine what can be retained and recommend suitable upgrade options.
